Black and Brown Bodies with Plants 2

Thank you, Edgar-Arturo Camacho-González & Abel Rodriguez and El Comalito Collective, for opening this call and accepting my piece titled  Self Portrait, 2021 in the exhibition titled Black and Brown Bodies with Plants 2.

Living on the East Coast, I usually don’t have the chance to spend this amount of time and space with as many black and brown artists with similar backgrounds as mine. I felt connected to all of you and appreciative of learning from your perspectives. You all give me hope! Keep changing the artistic landscape and inspiring your communities. I see you all!

My piece titled Self Portrait, 2021, which is an oil on canvas, 12 inches by 16 inches, originated when the COVID-19 Pandemic struck me. This piece forms part of my current work titled the Latinx Visual Resiliency Series, and it is the only self-portrait in this body of work. It gives context and sets the tone for the rest of the pieces. In this self-portrait, I explore the toll that the pandemic had on me.
