Community Engagement: Reflecting on our Vaccine and Food Drives
Hello, everyone. This is Antonio Alanis, and I'd like to express my gratitude to each of you for joining us today at the Me Vacuno Porque vaccine and food drives. It's been truly amazing to see the turnout. I'd like to take a moment to reflect on today's experience and extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to making these events possible.
Our team has been diligently working to spread awareness about the podcast, and today, we had the privilege of collaborating with two outstanding organizations in Durham. First and foremost, I want to acknowledge Latin19. A special thanks to Dr. Viviana Martinez-Bianchi and Sharon Muñoz for graciously hosting us during the vaccine drive and allowing us to engage with individuals receiving the vaccine, discussing our podcast.
We were able to distribute various items, including shirts, stickers, and invitations to our upcoming event, which marks the culmination of our program. Our premiere is scheduled for March 2nd from 10:30 AM to 1 PM, and we're eagerly anticipating the opportunity to continue celebrating this remarkable project.
Secondly, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to La Iglesia La Semilla UMC for once again welcoming our team. They hosted a food drive today, and Dorian and Raquel Carney did an incredible job assisting with the distribution of food boxes to community members who requested assistance, along with sharing information about our podcast premiere and distributing stickers and shirts.
I want to emphasize that while we assisted in distributing food boxes, we did not administer vaccines ourselves; we partnered with La Iglesia La Semilla and Latin19 who distributed the food and the vaccines.
I also want to take a moment to reflect on the significance of our work with Me Vacuno Porque. Firstly, I must acknowledge my colleague and co-producer, Dorian Gomez Pestaña, whose dedication has been instrumental in the success of our program. It was incredibly rewarding to witness the fruition of our efforts today, and Dorian's contributions have been indispensable in driving this project forward.
Additionally, I want to recognize Raquel Carney, our impact producer, for her tireless efforts in promoting our event and facilitating connections with organizations to maximize community engagement. Raquel played a pivotal role in coordinating logistical details for the vaccine and food drives.
Lastly, I want to express my immense gratitude to Marina Fela-Castillo, whose exceptional skills as a social media manager, content creator, and video editor have been invaluable in spreading awareness about Me Vacuno Porque. Marina's dedication and talent have been instrumental in amplifying our message, and I'm incredibly grateful to have her on our team.
Today's experience further underscores the importance of our project. Despite the availability of information, many individuals still have questions and seek spaces for informed discussions about vaccination. I'm proud that our project provides a platform for these conversations, as COVID-19 continues to pose challenges. Ongoing dialogue is essential.

Hello there, I’m Antonio! In today’s blog, I’m diving into the lessons I’ve learned over my two-year journey as a full-time artist and grant writer. So let’s rewind to 2022, when my adventure began, and fast forward to 2024 to recap these insights together.
Embracing the Unpredictability of Creative Life:
Leaving a steady job in Durham, North Carolina, I embarked on a path filled with both uncertainty and excitement. Regular paychecks were replaced by an inconsistent income based on various commissions and projects. The key was to embrace the slow months as opportunities for growth and learning. Attending webinars and workshops during these times allowed me to plan strategically and expand my skills.
The Importance of Balance and Rest:
One of the most crucial lessons I learned was balancing work with personal time. Rest isn’t just a break from work; it’s an integral part of the creative and mental process. It fuels my ability to produce more meaningful and enjoyable artwork. Remember, creating art is as much about resting as it is about fulfilling commissions.
From Artist to Business Strategist:
My background in Spanish Language and Literature, combined with a master's in Education, meant I had to learn a lot about being sefl employed. The transition from working on commissions to focusing on business strategy marked a significant shift in my career. Basic business information, understanding cash flow, and communicating effectively became as important as the art itself.
Continual Learning and Education:
Living in a rapidly growing city like Durham has been a blessing. The community’s focus on supporting its members has opened doors to numerous learning opportunities for me. Whether it’s a workshop or a conference, these resources have been invaluable in my journey.
The Power of Collaboration:
My achievements are not mine alone. They are the result of countless collaborations and support from friends, family, colleagues, and mentors. The Latin American Artists Collective (ILAAC), among other groups, has played a pivotal role in my growth. Networking isn’t just about expanding business; it’s about building genuine relationships and learning from one another.
Conclusion:
Leaving a secure job to pursue a passion in art and grant writing was a leap into the unknown. It’s been a path marked by both challenges and victories. The lessons I’ve shared are the stepping stones that have led me to where I am today. Statement on recent SCOTUS’ Decisions
I want to express my deep disappointment about removing affirmative action, preventing loan forgiveness, and discriminating against LGBTQ+ customers when seeking business services.
As a visual artist, Mexican-American, Hispanic educator, and grant writer who grew up in the United States, I have experienced and seen firsthand how our communities of color already face numerous disadvantages due to historical exclusion, racism, poverty, erasure, and many more systems of oppression.
It pains me that universities will deny brilliant and qualified students from accessing opportunities in college.
It pains me that loans will continue to hinder students and professionals from living thriving lives due to onerous debt.
It pains me that sexual orientation alone can lead to rejection and discrimination from someone commissioning or buying from a business; No one should be turned away based on their sexuality.
As a person, I have strived to create inclusive and welcoming spaces through art and education. These tools have enabled me to create spaces where my community can come together and imagine a world where we can imagine the possibilities we deserve.
These setbacks are not the end. I am committed to upholding values that foster opportunities for our communities that need it the most.
We deserve a better country than the one we experience and see today. This is not the world I envision for my community, my family, and myself.
We must continue to take action in our capacity and use our collective talents to ensure that students can continue to access higher education opportunities, college becomes affordable, and that people can live without fear of being turned away for who they are and whom they love.

Quiero expresar mi profunda decepción por la eliminación de la acción afirmativa, la falta de perdón de los préstamos y la discriminación contra clientes LGBTQ+ al buscar servicios en los negocios.
Como artista visual, educador hispano mexicoamericano y redactor de subvenciones que creció en los Estados Unidos, he visto y presenciado cómo nuestras comunidades de color enfrentan numerosas desventajas debido a la exclusión histórica, el racismo, la pobreza, la invisibilidad y muchos otros sistemas de opresión.
Me duele que las universidades nieguen oportunidades a estudiantes brillantes y cualificados para acceder a la educación universitaria.
Me duele que los préstamos continúen impidiendo que estudiantes y profesionales vivan una vida próspera debido a las deudas agobiantes.
Me duele que los negocios puedan rechazar a lxs clientes por su orientación sexual al pedir o comprar en un negocio; nadie debería ser rechazadx por su sexualidad.
Como persona, me he esforzado por crear espacios inclusivos que den la bienvenida a través del arte y la educación. Estas herramientas me han permitido crear espacios donde mi comunidad pueda unirse e imaginar un mundo en el que podamos visualizar las posibilidades que merecemos.
Estas decisiones no son el final. Me comprometo a mantener valores que sigan creando oportunidades para nuestras comunidades que más lo necesitan.
Merecemos un país mejor del que experimentamos y vemos hoy. Este no es el mundo que imagino para mi comunidad, mi familia y para mí.
Debemos seguir actuando en nuestra capacidad y utilizar nuestros talentos colectivos para asegurar que los estudiantes puedan seguir accediendo a oportunidades de educación superior, que las universidades sean asequibles y que las personas puedan vivir sin miedo de ser rechazadas por lo que son y a quienes aman.
